Insert your channel drain into the trench you have created. Ensuring that your channels connect and seal to the drain pipe. Make sure to use a mallet to press the drains into the trench before adding backfill or concrete around the channel run.

You can then add your grating of choice on top of the drain.

Often used to prevent overflow and floods from a buildup of surface water, channel drainage, commonly known as building drainage, helps to carry surface water away from roads, patios, and gardens.

Channel drainage works by releasing the strain on drainage systems, by managing and controlling the water flow. However, your drain channel needs to be cleaned frequently, especially during the rainy season when the channels tend to get clogged on more frequent basis.

So, how can you ensure that you keep your drains in check and clean to prevent any unwanted clogging.

  1.  Remove the grating from the channel.

 Usually, if your channel is a snap lock fastening you can do this by just pulling on the grate until it pops out of place. However, we do also supply a bolt & Bar locking system. Therefore, to remove this grating you will have to undo the bolt & bar and then you should be able to remove the grating from the channel.

If you are uncertain about which fastening your channel processes, it is best to refer to the manufactures guide. Once the grate has been successfully unlocked, slowly raise the lid from one end using the drainage hook or lifting key. Remove it entirely and put it to the side.

2. Cleaning the base of your channel.

Firstly, you need to remove all smaller debris that may have made into the drainage system, it’s more than likely only going to be any leaves and smaller twigs that have been caught up in the flow of water.

3. The channel body…

Once for have cleaned out the debris from your channel, you should use a hosepipe to properly rinse the channel’s body and get rid of any silt.

4. What to do with your sump unit?

Most channel drainage systems include a sump unit at the channel’s end. In essence, it serves as a filter by preventing any debris from entering storm drains/ underground drainage systems.

Once you’ve identified it, carefully remove the sump unit from the ground. Before reinstalling it, empty and clean it similarly to how you did the channel body.

5. Putting the channel back together-

Once you have cleaned the channel out you a ready for the reassembly of your system. Gently place the grill drain cover one length at a time, slowly. Put some pressure on it by stepping on it and watch as it snaps securely into place. If applicable you can now relock your grating into pace using the bolt & bar system.

And there you have it; your channel is now ready for use again…

How to find the correct load class.

It is extremely important to consider the maximum weight load classes while selecting your channel drainage. The class indicates that a product has undergone testing to demonstrate its ability to securely support the associated weight.

Therefore, any channels classified as E600 can hold up to 60 Tones, this sort of load class is perfect for roads in industrial areas, non-public roads, and other areas high wheel loads.

Due to the increased risk of flooding, it has now become a legal requirement that to install channel drainage on any driveway which is over 5m2.

What is channel drainage?

Without realising you will see channel drainage numerous times throughout your day-to-day life, you may have it in your garden, your driveway or walked over it whilst out and about. This is due to channel drainage being discreet, unobtrusive method of drainage, that can be used in a variety of different areas and applications such as patio areas in your garden to landing strips at the airport, to prevent the build-up of unwanted surface water.

Despite being a smaller more discreet method of drainage, your channel drainage can remove and prevent large quantities of water. Channel drainage can be laid in lengths, much longer than they are in width. This is due to the cross -sectional design which helps to contain the water flow from different surfaces.

Typical uses for our channel drainage:

Domestic areas:

We focus our domestic channels towards patio’s, gardens, driveways, doorways, and other landscaped areas. A domestic channel is usually load classes A15 (1.5 tonnes) or B125 (12.5 Tonnes).

Commercial Areas:

Our commercial drainage steps up a load class, these channels usually range from C250 (25 Tonnes) to E600 (60 Tonnes). Commercial channels are best suited for applications like car parks, retail parks, shopping centres and so on.

Industrial Areas:

Industrial areas need to be able to withstand the constant moving of heavy vehicles, therefore, they need to be F900 (90 tonnes). You would most likely find a F900 channel in industrial areas, delivery yards, docks, and airports.

Connecting your channel drainage to the underground drainage system.

Once you have drained the water from the above ground surfaces you need to dispose of it back into the sewer systems. To do so you can use two possible options, this being an end cap outlet, or a vertical outlet. Both methods allow you to attach the channel to drainage pipes.

A vertical outlet is in the bottom of the channel and can be easily cut out, this allows you to attach the channel to your drainage pipe by simply pushing it into place. Vertical outlets are normally 110mm diameter and can be found on our sister site

On the other hand, you may also use the end cap outlet this allows you to adapt the end of your run to fit a pipe connecting to the underground drainage system.

Efficient guide to the installation of your channel.

Step 1:

The first step in installing your channel drainage is digging the trench. You need to ensure that you dig deep enough for at least a 50mm sand base.

Step 2:

From here you need to attach a string line which is the length of your run, this line should finish at the height of your gratings. It is suggested that this line should sit around 2mm lower than the surface level once finished.


Once you are starting the actual installation process you should begin at the lowest point. E.g., when your section meets the drain.

Step 4:

When you have laid the first section of your channel you can slot the other sections in place. When placing the channels down you should do so with the gratings installed, to ensure they follow up in their height.

Step 5:

When you’re getting to the last stages of laying your channel you should now cap of the final section, using the end cap.

Step 6:

When the channel is in the ground you should seal and grooves with a silicone sealant, this ensure that the channel is watertight.

Step 7:

When your channel is lay you can start to pour the concrete. You should pour the concrete at a 2mm height difference above the grate section of the channel.

Ensuring you have the right product for the right job!

When following our guide, you should be able to install the channel perfectly, however, you can still botch up a job if you select the wrong channel.

It is vital that you install the channels that can withstand the heaviest loading that may pass over it. You should also look out for key components of the channel, one of these being the EN14 33 standards.

Facilities both inside and outside are vulnerable to water penetration and flooding. This is especially true in settings like shower rooms or car washes where water is a necessity. However, domestic driveways and patios could also require assistance with runoff management. Although creating drainage in completed hardscapes requires a little more labor, these instructions for constructing a channel drain in concrete should be beneficial.

How to choose the right channel for your area –

Firstly, Determine the location of the drain which will be used to remove the unwanted surface water. From here, you must also locate the destination of where the captured water will go.

Once you have completed the first steps you can now determine the style, size, and length of the channel drain you’ll be installing. Our Channels are available in various materials, widths, and depths.  The linear components of many of these channel drainage systems can be connected to create various lengths. Now you need to Confirm the drain’s capacity depending on the type and size of outflow pipe.

Top tip*

Slot drains have a much narrower entrance and may be more aesthetically pleasing if aesthetics is important to you. Trench drains are typically at least 4 inches wide.

Preparation is key –

As you prepare for the installation of your channel, you should mark the trench drain’s path with a chalk line.  You should also mark a line that extends as far away from the drains outside border as the manufacturer advises for installation.

Top tip*

To allow for backfilling with concrete when the trench is built, the trench you dig must be wider than the drain you will install.

Once you have marked out where the channel will sit you may use a jackhammer to break up the concrete between the two widest lines, removing the broken pieces as you go. You must do so until you have exposed soil throughout the whole length and width of the installation. (Alternatively, employ a professional to use this strong and hazardous weapon.)

Concrete, gravel, or sand are all acceptable bedding materials for channel drains. Think about the slope required to keep the water flowing. To create room for the bedding, dig deeper than your drain.

Installation time…

Once you’re ready, and prepared the bedding, you can start the installation process of your system. Most of our channel drainage systems can simply be clipped together to create the run and if needed sealant can be used to ensure they are extremely water tight.

When the channel is being installed you must be able to attach the to the PVC pipe, for the water to be transported to your property.

Channel drains installed to already-existing concrete need to be levelled off so that, after backfilling, the top is flush with the concrete. As soon as the drain is put together, make sure the top of the drain, including any grate if there is one, doesn’t protrude above the patio, driveway, or ground.

If the drain doesn’t sit flush with the concrete level, it will render the drain ineffective and poses a trip hazard. However, when you assembly and lay the concrete backfilling can begin.

The goal of driveway drain regulation is to reduce the amount of flooding in impacted regions and to prevent water from collecting on roadways and carriageways. According to the regulations, any newly constructed driveway must have the appropriate driveway drains in place.

If your driveway isn’t made of a permeable material, like gravel, you’ll frequently additionally need to apply for planning permission. Surface water may also be allowed to drain into a permeable region by way of gravel, for example.

Simply put, if you are installing a driveway that is larger than 5 m2, a suitable drainage system must be in place to allow the water to drain away.

Key considerations for the significance of driveway drainage:

How does channel drainage help with drainage issues in driveways.

The most often used drainage solution for most driveways is a channel drain, which significantly decreases the amount of surplus water on your driveway. The most popular drainage channels for driveways are domestic drainage channels, however B125 drainage channels are also often utilised because they can support up to 12.5 tonnes of weight. Due to its high load rating and use of polypropylene, this form of drainage channel is an improvement over conventional household channel drainage.

Installing the drain at the end of the driveway is necessary to prevent water runoff. A drainage pipe is typically used to link channel drainage systems to a soakaway.

Typically, the driveway slopes either away from or towards the property. At the end of the driveway, a linear channel drain collects the water, which is subsequently sent into a storm drain and removed.

The installation process:

  1. Remove any concrete or bricks from the trench’s intended location to make room for it. Make sure the trench is at the lower end of your driveway, away from your house, when you do this for your driveway.
  2. Following on from this you would need to dig the trench, it needs to be deep enough enough to support a 50 mm compacted sand base at the bottom and 100 mm of concrete to surround the channel’s sides. Additionally, account for a fall of about 5mm for each 1m of channel drain. Since most driveway drainage ditches lack an inherent fall or slope, this must be done.
  3. It is always advised to begin from the lowest position while installing the channel drain so that any significant length modifications can be made at the outlet’s farthest point. Make sure to link each length as you go. To ensure that the drain fits as tightly as possible, the final length can always be trimmed if necessary. After that, fit your end cap and seal it with high-quality silicone sealant at the highest position.
  4. For the final step you must pour concrete into the trench, raising it 2 mm over the grate’s surface. Prior to driving over the drain with big trucks, you must wait at least 72 hours.
